FISD Alternative's Teacher of the YEAR
Pam Harvey

I have lived in and around Nixon my entire life; I graduated from Nixon High School in 1978.  I married Morris Harvey of Nixon later that same year and have been happily married for almost 29 years.  Morris is a real estate broker and rancher; he owns and manages Mustang Realty in Nixon.  Morris and I have two beautiful daughters, Jill and Jordan.  Jill is 22 and is currently attending
Texas A&M University in College Station.  She graduated last summer with a degree in meteorology and is now working on a second degree in math.  Jordan is a 16-year-old sophomore at Nixon-Smiley High School.  She is a varsity cheerleader and an honor student; she plans to study early childhood at either Texas State University or Texas A&M University after high school graduation.  I am very blessed to have such a wonderful family.
I graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.  At that time I was certified to teach business and English.  I have since added five more endorsements to my teaching certificate; these include ESL, reading, speech, elementary, and media resources.  I have also worked on improving my technology skills and teaching methods by working with a team of teachers from Nixon-Smiley on two different technology grants.  In exchange for learning and implementing new technology on our respective campuses, we earned laptops, projectors, digital cameras, and other equipment for our school.  I enjoy learning new skills and information.
I have had the pleasure of working in three great school districts over the course of my teaching career.  I began teaching in Stockdale; I was there from 1989-1992.  I taught language arts at both the middle school and the high school levels, and I taught speech at the high school.  I then taught language arts, keyboarding, and speech at Nixon-Smiley Middle School for thirteen years from 1992-2005.
I currently teach language arts for all levels (K-12) and several electives at the Floresville Alternative School; I have been in this position for the past two years, and I love it.  It is very challenging at times, and our student body is constantly changing, but it is a great environment.  When I first came to work here, my principal, Mr. Box, told me that the people here are a family, and they truly are.  I am just so happy to be a part of it.  This year I was voted Teacher of the Year for my campus, but I feel that I share this honor with all the staff here because we all work together for the good of our students.  We strive to keep a positive, respectful, nurturing environment for students and staff alike.  I consider myself to be very blessed; I have a great family and a great career.
