With the shortage of teachers in science
and mathematics,
Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) will focus on
retaining
teachers in the classroom by having teachers as mentors. OLLU's
Teachers As Mentors (TM) program is designed to carry out the
primary
purpose of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Teacher
Enhancement program
which, in its broadest description, is to support
the content knowledge and
pedagogical skills of teachers of science,
mathematics, and technology (SMT).
Specifically, the TM program
will further the goals of the Teacher Renewal
and Retention Program to
build cadres of teachers who can (1) serve as
mentors to novice SMT
teachers during their induction years and/or (2) act
as change agents
responsible for implementing standards-based SMT programs
through
modeling standards-based teaching or providing professional
development
opportunities for their peers.
