6th Grade Elective Course Descriptions

Band
Parents are expected to provide an instrument. A limited number of larger instruments are available from the school. Please check with the band director on availability. Students who do not have an instrument by the end of the second week of enrollment will have a schedule change to another elective.

Fine Arts Required supplies: 24 count of colored pencils.
Fine Arts will incorporate a variety of activities and projects that introduce and explore the Element and Principles of Design. Activities will include the creation of artwork that focuses on creativity and the study of art history incorporating examples as a visual connection to the projects and the use of the Elements and Principles of Design.

Community and Character
This is a course in which students will be provided the opportunity to contribute to their community through service learning projects. Students will also acquire and practice skills needed to be good students (being prepared for class, time management, note taking and test preparation).

 

7th Grade Elective Course Descriptions

Art I For 7th and 8th graders
This course may only be taken once. An overview course designed to allow each student to explore a variety of media and media and methods. Projects focus on introducing and developing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Projects include drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
One set of Crayola colored pencils (colors to include: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) and completion of ALL classroom, sketchbook, and homework assignments.

Athletics
This course may be taken as the PE credit. It includes participation in sports activities consisting of football, volleyball, tennis, basketball, cross-country, track, and off-season conditioning. Select Athletics ONLY if you intend to participate for the entire year. Participation in 6th grade Physical Education class will be considered in eligibility for Athletics class. Preference will be given to students trying out for more than one sport. Enrollment in the athletics class is not mandatory for tryouts or participation on teams. Enrollment in the athletics class does not guarantee placement on a team. Participation in Athletics requires adhering to Athletic Rules and Standards. Student must have a physical. Returning FMS students who do not submit their completed physical by June 16, 2007 will not be scheduled into Athletics for the 06-07 school year and no schedule changes will be made after that date.

Band (BY AUDITION ONLY)
This course may be taken by students who have had band the previous school year and must be pre-approved by a director. Students are placed in one of two bands based on a competitive audition. Students who do not have an instrument by the end of the second week on enrollment will have a schedule change to another elective.

Career Choices
This course integrates the theme of career and life planning into an academic subject. It is a career guidance and self-discovery experience. By the students exploring their own particular abilities, ambitions, aptitudes, interests and dreams, students learn not only how this knowledge can help them plan for a future career and successful life, but it will also reveal the importance of being able to read, write, speak and compute well.

Journalism I For 7th and 8th graders. This course may only be taken once.
Students will plan design, and construct the Middle School Newspaper. Skills include planning, use of graphic art, journalism writing, photography and photo copying, layout design, and marketing. These students will also write articles for the school newspaper and assist with the yearbook.

Languages Around The World
This course is designed to create positive attitudes toward foreign language study and to foster positive appreciation of other cultures and languages. Thematic units form the focus of instruction. Topics include sports, holidays, food and clothing. Languages studied include Latin, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Spanish IA
This is a first year course that enables students to attain knowledge and skills at a novice level. The student will learn to communicate in a language other than English. The will use the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The student will also gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures. Students must complete and pass both 7th and 8th grade Spanish in order to obtain a high school credit for 1 year of Spanish.
