HAPPENINGS IN 5TH GRADE R.I.S.E.
September 3 - 7, 2007:
RISE Reading classes just began this week! We have been studying context clues. There are 10 clues which can help identify a word's meaning within the context of a story. See if your child can tell you what they are. The clues are:
1) Before or after the word "or"
2) Between parenthesis ( ), commas ,, , or dashes - -
3) Before or after the word "called"
4) Find the meaning of the word in the sentence before it.
5) Find the meaning of the word in the sentence after it.
6) Substitute a synonym once you have studied other words in the sentence.
7) Substitute an antonym (opposite) once you have studied other words in the sentence.
8) Use meanings of prefixes and/or suffixes in the word to help you determine the meaning of the word.
9) Know what part of speech the word is - noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.
10) Look at the title of the selection.
Hunting for word meanings can be a lot of fun. Try it using newspapers or magazines you may have at home. Happy hunting!
At the close of the week, we took a released TAKS Reading Benchmark to determine where all students in fifth grade are in relation to the four TAKS Objectives. We will be working hard to prepare for our test in 2008.
You can help by listening to your child read daily. It not only helps their fluency and comprehension, but additionally gives them the confidence and stamina they need to be successful!
