Henrietta Leavitt Henrietta Leavitt was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She lived to be 53 years old. She was the daughter of a congregational minister. She was American. She attended Oberlin College which was the Society for Collegiate Instruction of Women (later Radcliffe College). Henrietta Leavitt discovered a way to measure distance between stars, which helped other astronomers to measure the size of the universe. Miss Leavitt was an honorary member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers. Interesting Facts: She died because of cancer. After she graduated she spent several years at home because she got very sick and her illness made her deaf.
