Ed the Ermine

By Corinne M.

I woke up one winter night with my brothers and sisters in the hollow log we lived in.  Mom came in and said she caught us each one mouse and two squirrels.  We each ate like pigs and stuffed ourselves.  A few minutes later, Dad came in and said he had some good news and some bad news. “ Good news first!  Good news first!” shouted my sisters, brothers and me.

“Okay, okay!” Dad laughed, his strong voice bellowing.  “The good news is, summer is coming soon, and the bad news,” Dad said,  “Is that the trappers are coming tomorrow.”

“Are they going to get us?” Sydney, my smallest sister asked.

“Not if we move under Badger Cave,” said Dad.

The following morning, my whole family was walking to Badger Cave when about twenty gigantic owls swooped over us and took my brother, Quincy, and soared up ahead of us.

“Aaaaah!” Quincy screamed.  “Put me down NOW!”

We all just stared up, awestruck, not knowing what to do.

Sydney was waving slowly and saying, “Bye bye, brother.”

Then we all started rushing toward Badger Cave.  Lucky for us, the owl’s home was in Badger Cave, so we got Quincy back very soon.

The trappers came later. I couldn’t help myself, so I went over to one. I was hungry, anyways. He was holding some cottontail meat in his hand.  I climbed up his coat and started nibbling at the meat.

“Get down, you overgrown rat!” he said, and threw me off.  I hurried away from him and back to my family.  Five hours later, the trappers left and my family and I went back to our log.

When we got there, Mom said, “What fun!  We’ll have to do this next week.”

I groaned. Next week is going to be a long week.
