George Ellery Hale

George Ellery Hale was born in 1868 in Chicago.  Hale invented the spectroheliograph which allows you to take pictures of the Sun in broad daylight. In 1916 Hale won the Bruce medal. He started three great observatories (Yerkes, Mt. Wilson, and Palomar). In 1895 Hale began the Astrophysical Journal which is still important. He wrote popular books including Depths Of The Universe (1926), Beyond The Milky Way (1926), and Signals From The Stars (1931). Hale never finished his Ph.D. He died in 1938.
