Ways You Can Help

We asked our local leaders, "How can students get involved to make our community better?"

Here are some of their suggestions.

  • Students can help their community by becoming involved in a variety of activities and organizations like church, Girl and Boy Scouts, 4-H, and extracurricular activities at school.

  • Apply yourself at school and try to help your parents as much as possible. Learn as much as you can so that when you are older and are more able to be on your own, you’ll be more prepared, to volunteer with projects that you have some skills to be of value. You learn those skills and values by helping your parents, and learning what they know how to do.

  • (Students can help by) volunteering at school for projects and when they get a chance to, visit (others in the community).  Get to know the community organizations and help their parents and peers when in they are in trouble.

  • Be in sports, clubs and just be aware of what goes on in Floresville.

  • Be involved in their schools and in clubs.

  • Find something that you like to do and go out into the community and see what the need is, or see if there is a need for you to do that. Just go do it. Don’t think twice about it, just do it.

  • Get to know the local leaders.

  • Visit people in the nursing home.

  • Be involved in activities outside of school and inside school, such as 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Band.

  • Encourage other kids to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

  • Help a neighbor or at the church.

  • Start a computer club where students who are computer literate (can) teach the citizens of Floresville about computers.

  • Have their parents take them to council meetings, school board meetings , church activities and the post office!

  • (Get involved with) service.... you can’t talk about things; you have to go out and do things. You need to go out and help; for instance go to a neighbor’s house and mow their yard.

  • Watch (your) parents; (work) through the school with different activities.

  • Children can help the community by staying in school, and (learning) as much as (they) can and continue learning.

  • Be interested in county government...and (get) involved in your community.  (That's) one of the greatest things you can do (because) we make decisions at court which affect people's lives.

  • Volunteer time in social activities that help people.

  • Identify a particular need and join together to help somebody else out, whether it’s somebody in your school that doesn’t have food to eat or not so good clothing to wear to school.

  • There are a lot of organizations that could use a lot of volunteer help, organizations like the Historical Society and Main Street Project.

  • Students can help their community by being good students, because if they learn a lot, then they’re going to be able to contribute something back to their community, to make it a better place for everyone.

  • Do not play with matches or anything that can cause a fire.
