Hotel Sutherland
by Coop

The Hotel Sutherland was in Sutherland Springs, by the mineral springs.  The resort's hotel had fifty-two rooms and was fifty thousand dollars in cost.  Sunset Depot provided a part of a railroad for tourists from all over Wilson and Bexar County.  People who came to the resort came from as far as Mexico, Canada, and even England.  The hotel was furnished with running water, the newest design in toilets, and an electric system in a tin barn behind the hotel which held a generator that supplied electricity for the whole hotel.  This was very modern for the year of 1910!  Signs around the hotel said:

  • Largest group of mineral springs in America-sulfur, iron, and sour waters that will cure any durable disease
  • All drinking and gambling rooms strictly off limits
  • Please do not spit or throw ashes on the floor
  • Any damage to furniture other than ordinary wear will be charged to occupants of room
