Statues

One of the statues that Mr. Ximenez made is in my back yard.  It is a big tree table.  The people who used to live at my house had a dog which was very precious to them and it died.  They buried the dog in the back yard and asked Mr. Ximenez to build a table (which looks like a tree) in memory of their dog.  The dog’s name, “Teterine”, and the year he died “1938” are on the side of the tree.  The Ximenez’ also built other monuments and vases which can be found in the local cemeteries.

The most eye catching of all the things the Ximenez’ made are the monsters and creatures.  Upon further questioning, we found that it was Mrs. Ximenez (Arturo’s mother, better known by her family as “ Little Grandmother”) who made all of the monsters.  (His father made the dinosaurs and most of the furniture).  Little Grandmother’s art was featured in an article in the Dallas Time Herald, August 17, 1986, where she said that her favorite statue is “ The Monster That Came Out Of The Water”. The author describes this as “--a 5-foot tall green creature with red mouth sprouting cows’ teeth, and a breastplate of oyster and scallop shells imbedded in the concrete.”
