Early Days

In 1875, a young preacher named Ichabod Kingsbury was assigned to gather people to form a church in Floresville.  Six charter members met in the home of W.C. Agee, who was later elected the first secretary of the Quarterly Conference.  In 1876, Lot 4 -block 23 was picked to be the site of the new Methodist Church building.  This is the present location of the Floresville United Methodist Church, at the corner of 4th and B streets.  For the first ten years, the congregation met in the public school and courthouse.  In 1887, the church had its own building for worship.  Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by a tropical storm soon after its completion.  In 1888-1889, a new building was constructed.  Pews for the new church were donated by money raised from oyster dinners cooked by the women of the church.  They spent many hours cooking the oysters over woodburning stoves.
