Life on the Farm |
| From the beginning Kosciuszko was a farming community and still is today. Most of the Polish families that settled in this area depended on the crops they grew and the animals they raised for their survival. The early settlers farmed by using equipment pulled by mules. It was very hard work. Some of the crops they grew were corn, peanuts, cotton, and milo. Crops had to be harvested by hand. Today, farmers in the area have the most modern equipment available. Besides crops, they also raised a variety of animals. They raised hogs, cattle, and chickens for meat and to sell at market. Chickens also provided eggs for the family. Guineas were raised for meat, and they also kept snakes away. Today, some farmers still raise hogs and cattle, but the fallen market has forced many to sell out and only raise what they need for meat. |
