Celebrations

The people of Kosciuszko had and still have many celebrations that center around their church life.  Some of them are baptisms, funerals, first communions, confirmations, and anniversaries.  One of the biggest celebrations is a wedding.  In an interview with Lorraine Lyssy, she said that prior to 1961, weddings were held on Tuesdays.  Couples would have a wedding mass at the church, but the reception would be at a private home.  Preparation for the celebration took several weeks.  Friends and relatives of the bride and bridegroom made sausage, baked pastries, and other food was prepared.  Beginning around 1961, weddings were held on Saturdays and began with a mass at 8:00 in the morning and went all day long into the night.  At this time, weddings were held at the community hall.  Friends and relatives enjoyed lunch and dinner, and in the evening there was a dance.  Today, weddings are still a big celebration and take months of preparation.  Friends and relatives sometimes help prepare the meal.  Some weddings are catered.  During the reception at some Polish weddings a group of people will go around with a big pot singing “Dietche, Dietche”.  Guests put in money, usually pocket change or a couple of dollars.  Traditionally, the money is for the bride to save for diapers for her first baby.
