Jailhouse Museum
|
| The Wilson County Jailhouse Museum is a
beautiful place. It is located in downtown Floresville, Texas at the Courthouse Square. It
is open on the first and third Saturday of every month and on special occasions (such as
Peanut Festival, etc.). This building served as a jail and a sheriff's residence until 1974, when a new Criminal Justice facility was constructed on the courthouse grounds. The Wilson County Historical Society now has a museum in the jail house. The two layers of cells, located on the second and third floors, are occupied by the Courthouse for storage. The jail itself contains two levels of cells located on the second floor. Two entrances lead to this prison area; one from the dining room, and the other through a steel door in the back of the building. At the top stair level, a trap door was installed for hangings, yet it did not function properly and was only used once for a hanging. The amount of money needed to construct the building was approximately $5,500 dollars. It was constructed by James R. Gordon in 1887. I got this information from The Wilson County Jailhouse Museum Pamphlet given to me when I toured the Jail museum. |
