| In Canada Verde there is an old bar that has
fallen down by now. I will tell you about this building. The structure is
located on 1303 FM (Farm to Market road) in Canada Verde. It has a sign on it which
says 1896 and was originally owned by a French family. A grocery store was
opened there for all the people in the community. Later it became a bar in the
1930s. It was a popular place for the men in the community, a place to get away and
relax. Since pool games, cards, and dominoes where among the popular interests
in a small community, the only place to go was "1896". Some of the people
who ran the bar were: Santiago Garza, Ben Montoya, Frank Alley, and Ramon
Cassias. Some of the last owners were Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Dominguez. They
continued the bar business and added a restaurant along with other features such as soft
drinks, snow cones (raspas) and candy for the Canada Verde community. People drive
by and stop to take pictures of this old relic as I have shown it to you here. Now
the famous structure has fallen apart. On one side of the wall where you see the crack in
the picture, the wall fell in. This caused the front and roof to fall in. We
are sad in our community to see that this building has been forgotten about. It might have
been kept as an unforgettable landmark to beautify the area. As a 104 year old
structure, it can never be replaced. When I grow up, I could come and visit
this place in front of my house along with all the memories of my childhood. I'd like to thank my grandfather for giving me most of the information above. |
