Brahan Lodge
by Rhonda B.

Brahan Lodge No. 226 was named after Robert Weekly Brahan. He was a local physician and cotton planter.  The Brahan Lodge was originally built in 1859 and burned in 1867.  The son of Mr. Brahan helped move the building to La Vernia.  The building is made of red sandstone.  It has twenty windows but no two are the same size.  During the past century the building has sunk approximately two feet into the ground.  From 1871 to the middle 1950s the lower floor was used for public school purposes and until 1910 was the only school in the community.  The two acres on which the building stands was bought by Mrs. Georgia Morgan for only $ 25.00!

This was information given to me while I was on a tour of the building.  Michael Filt was the source of the information and he provided me with an informational sheet while I was on the tour.
