I did this interview with a kind gentleman who attended the Alum
School long ago.
I'd like to thank him for all his help. Q:
What subjects did you study?
A: Math, Reading, Writing, and English
Q: What did you do in your spare time?
A: I played baseball and ran track
Q: What grades or grade were you in?
A: I first moved into Stockdale and was in the 6th
grade and was twelve years old.
Q: How did you get to school?
A: I walked to school, before dawn with a lantern, and
when there was daylight I put the lantern in some brush, and on the way home I took it
out.
Q: Why did they shut the Alum school down?
A: The first Alum school burned down and it was
rebuilt. Then people started to go to school in town, Stockdale, and soon the Alum school
was shut down.
Q: What did you eat for lunch?
A: I had either a biscuit or some cornbread with an egg
in the center, at room temperature with the Alum water and that was lunch. |
