The Arrowhead

Silo, my brother, my dad, Touchy, and I lived in a damp, dark cave filled with bat guano. A fire sat in the middle, crackling loudly, demanding for something to cook. Suddenly a mound of bat guano fell into the fire, making it spark. “I’m not so sure I want supper now,” I said.

Suddenly light filtered through the cave as Silo rolled the huge boulder to one side. Light caught my eye and I saw my dinner (a buffalo) supported on Silo`s shoulder.

As soon as the buffalo finished cooking in the scorching fire, we ate a hearty feast. Silo picked up two stones and crouched over a small boulder, making something. I decided to go play with my friend, Atcho. After what seemed like a second, I came running back to the cave, filled with joy for I had won the game we were playing.

I suddenly remembered that I’d seen Silo making something. Curiosity overwhelmed me and I touched the shoulder that had carried the buffalo and asked,  “What are you making?”

He turned to me and handed me a shiny, black arrowhead. I took it and attached it to a sturdy, thick stick. I told my dad I would go and practice with my new spear. Atcho wanted to practice with it, so I let him. Nato, our pet, seemed to desire my spear. It was bedtime so I placed my spear in the corner of my room. In the morning I grabbed my spear and went out to practice more. Nato followed me out.

I hurled my spear into the air and Nato went to grab it. He got hit in the stomach and fell to the floor. I rushed over with tears in my eyes. Nato looked up at me and gave me a sympathetic lick and then closed his eyes. I cried a river of tears over his body as I went to bury him. My family in the cave listened as I told the tragic tale. I showed them were I buried him and then we led a prayer for him. I saw the spear and kicked it into a clump of bushes. As I went down to the river to pray about Nato going his way to heaven, Atcho came over and said, “ I heard the news.”

As my prayers for Nato rose to heaven, it occurred to me: Someone in the future would get this spear.
