A Lifesaving Landslide
A time long ago, before Indians roamed the earth we lived in peace. We were always relaxed and worry-free. Our life was simple and happy. One day, rocks started disappearing. All of them were flat or cylinder shape, like JJ and me. During the daytime we would here crash, clang, or bang. Day by day this happened, and more of my kind disappeared. Therefore, Jay, Spotty, and I decided to figure out who was taking us. To our surprise, a crazy Indian picked up Jay and me. “Spotty, help us,’’ cried Jay helplessly. That night, I felt as if I had fallen into my worst nightmare. The Indian carried us to what he called his tribe. All I saw was hundreds of cones coming up from the ground. Suddenly something hit my back. It was Jay in the hands of an Indian woman! She had told another woman that she was grinding corn with her new metate. After many hours of grinding, the Indian woman stopped. She placed us in her teepee and walked away. We both settled down to rest. Jay quickly fell asleep. I could not; I was up all night thinking about how bad life would be. The next morning we woke up to the sound of young Indians screaming. Jay peeked out of the cone and saw that the Indian woman was warning everyone about something or other. I had no idea of what was going on. All of a sudden, the ground beneath us let loose and we were sent tumbling down a steep hill. The whole world seemed to be still. I remember the many thoughts that went through my head, of my home, my best friend Jay, and even the crazy Indians. It didn’t matter, though; I was going to crack in two. I woke up to a dark world, no light, no nothing. All of my senses were numb. I couldn’t even feel the soft cushion of grass beneath me. I started to panic. Where was I? Was Jay here too? I wanted to scream, but I knew that panicking wouldn’t help anything so I took a deep breath and called out Jay’s name. She replied with a tired voice. The whole time she was right next to me. A light of hope flickered inside me. Maybe we were going to make it. I looked around and saw very familiar things. I just barley realized that the landslide had sent me down the hill back to my home. Just then, I got that funny feeling you get when everyone’s eyes are on you. I sat there listening to the sounds of nature around me, not knowing whether to scream or to run away. I felt as if I was going to explode with anxiety. Then someone called my name. The person’s voice sounded just like my mother. It just had to be her; it’s not like I was imagining it or something. I looked up and not only saw her, but Spotty and my whole family. |
