My Great Grandfather’s Glasses By: Mason R.
“Ring, Ring,” Joe Schreider’s alarm woke him up. “Dad,” said his son Curtus, “get up! Today’s the day when you get your glasses!” “Honey, are you almost ready?” asked Joe’s wife, Betty. “I made you some pancakes and some delicious omelets.” “All right everyone, in the car, or I’m going to be late for my doctor’s appointment.” The family arrived at the doctor’s office just in time for his appointment. Joe was there because his eye sight was very bad. “Mr.Scheider, may we see you in the back for your checkup?” the nurse asked. The doctor kept asking Joe questions like, “Can you tell me the letters on this line?” or “How many fingers am I holding up?” Joe was worried because he’d never been to an eye doctor before. The nurse came out with a piece of paper showing his scores. “Those are bi-focal glasses and that’s exactly what you need. May you please follow me to the register so you can pay for them? That will be… fifty three dollars, please.” Joe walked over to where his family was and then it started: the question train. His kids were asking questions like, “What did they say?” or, “What kind of glasses are those?” Joe tried to answer the questions the best he could. “These are bi-focal glasses. Can you see the different piece of glass? Well that’s the bi-focal part.” Joe got a job offer to be a merchant in La Vernia, Texas with a man named Bob. He hoped the glasses would help him see while doing his job. While selling items, Joe got run over by a drunk driver and damaged his lungs. “Dad, your glasses are broken, how are you going see?” “It doesn’t matter; I need you more than those glasses in my life.” A few months passed and finally the Schreider family got the news that Joe could leave the hospital. The doctor said Joe was in good condition! Joe had gotten another pair of his glasses and started back on his job. The family knew that they were blessed; Well, I guess you can say that. The family and Joe made a remarkable recovery. Still the glasses are still passed down family to family with a wonderful story for each; this is the one I, Mason Ray, told! |
