Basketball Glossary Assist-A pass to a teammate that leads to a basket. Backboard-The rectangular board to which the basket is attached. Backcourt- When the ball has already passed the half court line and you pass it or dribble it across it again without an interference by the other team. Will result in the other team having possession of the ball. Bounce pass- A pass that bounces off the floor and up to the receiver. Boxing out- Blocking an opponent with your body to get a good rebounding position. Chest pass- A pass that is released from the hands at chest level. Defense- The way of defending the offense so that they don't get a basket. Double Dribble- (1) The illegal act of dribbling, stopping, and then dribbling; (2) The illegal act of using both hands to dribbling the ball. Dribble-To bounce the ball off the ground in a continuing motion. Ejected- To be thrown out of the game. Foul- Illegal contact between players. Free Throw- A one-point shot from the foul line that opponents are not allowed to block. Half- A sixteen minute period in which two teams play. Hook shot- A shot in which the player extends his or her arm overhead in a hooking motion. Jump shot-A shot in which the shooter leaps as he or she releases the ball; also called a jumper. Lane-Another term for the three second lane. Lay-up-A shot taken next to the basket in which the backboard is used to bank the ball. Offense-the team that has the ball and is trying to score. Overtime- an extra time period of five minutes played if the score is tied at the end of the game. Passing- to throw the ball to another player. Pivot- to keep one foot planted on the floor and step around it with the other foot. Possession- having the ball. Quarter- four in a game; eight minutes each. Rebound- (n) a missed shot that bounces off the backboard or basket; (v) to go to the net and gain control of the ball after a missed shot. Referee- the official that watches the game and calls fouls. Shooting- to throw the ball at the basket. Slam Dunk- a shot in which a player pushes the ball down through the basket. Three point line- a semi-circular line that is usually nineteen feet and nine inches from the basket and if you make the shot you get three points. Traveling- moving with the ball two steps or move without dribbling. History | Warming Up
