What's Happening in P.E.
For the week of 8-25-08 through 8-29-08, the students will:
1. Have Orientation (It is explained below.)
2. Do Exercises and Stretches
3. Learn How to Exit the Pavilion for the Fire Drill
4. Learn Where and How to Line Up
5. Play Duck Duck Goose
6. Practice the Log Roll
7. Practice the Side Roll (Second Grade Only)
To begin the school year, the last week in August will be spent on orientation. The purpose of this orientation is to help keep all the students safe and allow the class to be run more effectively and efficiently. The students learn the rules, consequences, and rewards of the class. In reality, orientation actually lasts for several weeks. Students do not need to "worry" if he/she does not understand everything the first week.
I also teach a small health unit during P.E. A health curriculum has been set up in P.E. for every nine weeks. The health that I teach correlates with the health the students are learning in the classroom. This week in P.E., starting on Friday, the students will describe, select, and use protective equipment and appropriate equipment in preventing injuries such as helmets, elbow/knee pads, wrist guards, proper shoes, and clothing.
There is also Coordinated School Health. Once a month the students will learn about health with the same "FOCUS" on different places on the Primary Campus, including P.E. For the month of August, the FOCUS is on Safety. The First Grade students and the Second Grade students will be learning safety through orientation.
In addition, I try supplement what the students are learning in the classroom on Character Education. This week the lesson is on "Respect".
Additional Information About The P.E. Program
Please make sure your child comes to P.E. with tennis shoes and that girls wear shorts under their dresses, skirts, etc. Students come to P.E. three days a week. You can find out the time and the days your child comes to P.E. if you go back and click on "schedule". You will need to know the name of your child's teacher.
Please write a note and send it with your child if you would like him/her to sit out of P.E. Generally, I sit a student out for one day if the note does not say how long the child is to sit out. School Policy states that if a student sits out for more than three days, a doctor's note must be turned in. Please help me by knowing on what days your child comes to P.E. and when three consecutive days are up.
Games/Activities are played throughout the year. Some of them include Animal Walks, Rolling Activities, Duck Duck Goose, Red Light, Simon Says, Hot Potato, Under the Beam, Find the Color Mark, Find The Row, Get to the Box, "The Knot Game", Freeze Tag, Hopscotch, Follow the Leader, The Crab Game, Parachute games/activities, Ball Chase, Rolling Bowling, Throwing Bowling, Kick Bowling, Jumping Rope by oneself, Jumping Rope that is turned by two people, etc. The games/activities primarily teach and reinforce motor skills while exercising them at the same time. Good sportsmanship is expected in all games and activities.
We will also continue to explore various sport skills throughout the year. The students will learn many of them. A few of them that the students will be learning are walking, running, jumping, hopping, galloping, skipping, sliding, leaping, throwing, catching, kicking, balancing in different positions, etc. These skills may take several weeks/months for the student to master.
P.E. In General
One part of P.E. is physical fitness. This includes various exercises and stretches. Some of them may be challenging for the children. The students are encouraged to practice them at home. Physical fitness promotes such things as aerobic endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility.
The other part of P.E. is motor fitness. It is the bigger part of the program because it is designed to get the students motivated about P.E. This includes a wide variety of skills/sport skills that build upon each other. Motor skills are generally introduced by playing games/activities. Generally, the games/activities are played for the week. This allows the child to practice and master the rules and skills of the game and allows me time to work with your child if needed. The students are encouraged to practice the motor skills at home as well.
