Book Adventure

Book Adventure is a free reading motivation
program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists
from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the
books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary
successes. Book Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan
Learning. Pros: You can search the site by grade level, author, ISBN, title, etc., printables and online activities provided, feedback is provided to students regarding quiz answers, can link to child's account-monitor and track progress, rewards students for efforts and accomplishments. Cons: Parental controls to prevent student exposure to certain content is not available (however you can monitor child's reading and activities afterward), loading the complete booklist may take a while, limited to grades K-8. |

Offers a variety of interactive learning experiences based on various children's shows shown on PBS. There are also printable coloring sheets available. The site is colorful and high interest with no advertising. The site is free, but does require registration. Pros: Some of the games are educational, printable sheets and music on site can add a fun aspect to lessons. Cons: There is not master list of games or skills the games address. There are also no age recommendations for the games. |

Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids

information about Benjamin Franklin and his inventions, games and activities,
maps, and links to U.S. government web sites. The site is divided into
grade levels K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Pros: Navigation on the site is easy as site is divided into grade levels, provides fun and interesting ways to learn about our country, neighborhoods, laws, symbols, etc. An activity book is provided which can be downloaded and printed or ordered in print form from the site. There are lots of free online games but all with an educational
focus. There are over 400 pages of kids educational games, interactive writing,
animated stories, songs, kids puzzles, art, math, science, social studies,
distance learning and much more. Pros: Some of the stories have a feature where the child clicks on the word and it says the word, some have various sound effects, and some have quizzes at the end. On the games page there is an explanation of the games and the particular skill they address, All activities are fully explained on each content area page. Cons: Lots of music and noise with each page, some items will need adult assistance to figure out how to do the activity or game. |

AAA Math features a comprehensive set of
interactive arithmetic lessons. Unlimited practice is available on each
topic which allows thorough mastery of the concepts. A wide range of lessons
(Kindergarten through Eighth grade level) enables learning or review to
occur at each individual's current level.
Immediate feedback prevents practicing and learning incorrect methods, which is
a common result of traditional homework and worksheets. The CD runs
on Windows and Macintosh computers. You do not need to be connected to the
internet to use it which is desired by many parents of young students. There are
no advertisements on the CD Pros: The lessons from the website as well as additional lessons are on the CD which is available in English or Spanish language versions. Practice can continue as long as desired in a non-threatening format which helps build self-esteem and confidence. Immediate feedback prevents students from practicing the wrong method. Students may print out a copy of their work when they have finished a particular task. Cons: Advertising on the site, no long term record of progress |

iKnowthat.com has activities for Prek-sixth grade in The Arts, Language
Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Thinking Games, Quiz Central. There is
also a teacher guide available. Registration is required. Pros: The site is very exciting and motivating for children. The games and activities reinforce skills learned in the classroom. Cons: There is a lot of advertising on the site and to use all of the site requires a subscription. However, the free sections provide plenty of activities for children to benefit from this site. |
