Life Long Ago

Now days Floresville has grocery stores, a movie place, etc., but they didn't always have that.  In order to find out about the old days I did an interview with Mr. Claude Gilley, and here are the results.

Q:  What year were you born?
A:  I was born April 25, 1921

Q:  Where were you born (home, hospital, etc.)?
A:  I was born in a hospital, and delivered by Dr. Sparks.

Q:  In Wilson County where were most of the people born?
A:  Most of the people were born in hospitals.

Q:  Where did you go to school?
A:  I went to a school called Midway on Highway 87.

Q:  Could you describe the school?
A:  There was more than one room.  The classes only went up to 11th grade, and there was no college.

Q:  Could you describe the teachers?
A:  Mrs. Lucy Neil and Mrs. May Glass.  They were old gray-headed ladies.

Q:  What activities did you do after school?
A:  I'd come home, change and work.

Q:  What did your parents do for living?
A:  They farmed.

Q:  What did most people do for living?
A:  Most people either farmed or sold peanuts.

Q:  Did you have a bike or anything like that when you were young?
A:  No. I didn't even know what shoes were until I was 14.

Q:  What was your way of transportation?
A:  To walk 6 miles to town and back.

Q:  When did you get your first car?
A:  In 1949, when I was 28 years old.

Q:  What was your first car?
A:  It was a Chevrolet.

Q:  Did kids ever play together (baseball, tag, hide and seek)?
A:  No.  Well, sometimes we played in the old jail.

Q:  Where there any festivals or celebrations?
A:  Sometimes, but they weren't very big.
