A Newsworthy Kid of Character: Andrea Canchola

Lesson Summary

Students will identify characteristics that make Andrea a caring person and a good citizen. Students will recognize that even young children can make a difference and brainstorm ways they can make a difference. Students will formulate a plan for contributing to the Make-A-Wish campus project.

(C) express needs, wants, and emotions in appropriate ways;

(12) Citizenship. The student understands characteristics of good citizenship as exemplified by historic figures and ordinary people. The student is expected to:

(A) identify characteristics of good citizenship such as a belief in justice, truth, equality, and responsibility for the common good

Second Grade:

Students will discuss how Andrea Canchola made a difference in the lives of other children. Students will examine ways they can make a difference in someone’s life by being a person of character. Students will discuss the Make-A-Wish foundation and how this foundation helps people. Students will formulate a plan for contributing to the Make-A-Wish project for the campus.

  1. Read about Andrea Canchola and discuss her accomplishments. (View website for a picture)
  2. Use the Scholastic Character Scrapbook to analyze Andrea’s characteristics.
  3. Have students formulate ways they could help others.
  4. Visit the Make-A-Wish foundation web site and discuss how the foundation helps people.
  5. Discuss how the students might earn money to give towards the Make-A-Wish project.
